department of corrections, mass murder in america was most severe in 1929. in recent years, there were 32 mass killings in the 1980s, 42 in 9 '90s and 26s in the first decade of this century. according to the department of justice, murders of school age children have declined by 42% in the past 15 years. the latest stats show 1% of the murdered kids died at school. now, that's not to diminish the horrible crimes we have seen in connecticut and other places recently. all americans should understand that violence like that harms america's image throughout the world and we do have a gun culture here. no question about it. if the feds can tighten up gun laws without violating constitutional rights, they should do so. is it legal is one glaring question. how could the mother of the killer have acquired an ar 15 when connecticut has tough gun law? to build a build country, a safer country, we don't need knee jerk reactions after heinous crimes. we need smart solutions. listen to this exchange at the white house yesterday. >> you name one thing the president has done in the last four years to he

of the panel benghazi attack of capitol hill today. briefed law americas behind closed doors about the findings. here is the finding. it says in part systemic failures and leadership in management deficiencies at senior levels. grosslien inadequate to break. the time line of the benghazi attack left four people dead including the u.s. ambassador to libya. more determined there had been no specific warning of a potential attack on 9-11. there had been several incidents on the days before the attack which should have set off alarm bells. the obama administration blamed spontaneous demonstration against an anti islamic video. it turns out there was no demonstration. wall street journal is reporting that surveillance cameras around the compound shows that to be the case the video confirming there was no protest before the attack. neither does it prove that al qaeda was involved in a preplanned attack according to the newspaper. the raw video was edited into a 10-minute presentation provided to law americas. they started kicking in doors instead of blasting their way in saying they didn

america are responsible. they purchase guns illegally and they use them safely. whether for hunting or sport shooting, collection, or protection. but i am also betting that the majority, the vast majority of responsible, law-abiding gun owners would be some of the first to say we should able to keep an irresponsible lawbreaking few from purchasing a weapon of war. i'm willing to bet they don't think using and using common sense are not compatible ideas. that's an unbalanced man should not able to get his hands on a military-style assault weapons so easily. that in this age of technology we should be able to check someone's criminal records before he or she can check out at a gun show. that if we work harder to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people there would be fewer and tragedies like the one in newtown. or any of the lesser known tragedies in small towns and big cities all across america every day. since friday morning, a police officer was gunned down in memphis leading four children without their mother. two officers were killed outside a grocery store in topeka. a woman

connecticut names that have become iconic in america is bizarre and shameful epidemic of gun violence. the company says they are doing it in response to what happened in a new town. students at sandy hook where the newtown. supplies and equipment from sandy hook are being moved to a neighboring school. the school is expected to remain closed for some time and rightfully so. in the wake of the connecticut school shootings president barack obama showed his support behind their renewal of the ban on assault weapons. he has actively supported senator feinstein's intend to revive a piece of legislation that would reinstate the assault weapons ban. he said that president barack obama also wants to ban or limit to the sale of high capacity ammunition clips and closed the gun show loophole, the nra has broken its silence of the sandy hook massacre in a statement they said out of respect for families and as a matter of common decency... they plan to hold a news conference friday in washington. president preckwinkle saying that the board is standing by its assault rifle ban asking the

fleet week activity and i highlight some of those here, so with the america cup's races which we had been planning for starting at the beginning of the year. three successful exercises in preparation for the first week of racing that took place in august and continued in october and as the mayor mentioned october was incredibly busy for us with america's cup and the fleet week activities we had going on, to additional exercises. we had a senior leader seminar and a disaster aid presentation on marina green. other things that took place that the mayor mentioned the bluegrass and castro street parade and a finer and giants game and lead to the playoffs and all happened on the same day so when we go we definitely go big. after those activities we had the annual shake out drill, one of the largest demonstrations of the public what their responsibilities are to be ready and we rolled into the playoffs and the world series and admiral you will be happy to know this facility is used on a regular basis and get the departments together and communicate and collaborate and make sure we're prepa

make. we don't want to send the message to america that bullying is normative; that bullying is normal, and that clip illustrated that the school is sending that message, and there is a difference, an important distinction between the school sort of embodying and sending the message to the kids that bullying is just a part of growing up and believing that bullying in our school is normative because it simply isn't. the data shows bullying is going down and that is not a popular thing to say these days. bullying is a very important social problem that we need to fix, but it is not an epidemic and it's not on the rise and neither is cyber bullying and the top scholars in the country and in social science and psychology that saying that, so that's an important distinction so thank you both so much. >> and there is that and -- there's a balance between -- i mean when i hear that bullying is going down i mean all of us should rejoice because that to me is indicative of the fact of the work in communities across the country are starting to pay off, but it's going to be hard in this ar

in new york. let me start tonight by talking about america. the preamble of our constitution addresses two areas of security. one is to provide for the common defense against foreign enemies. the second is to ensure domestic tranquility from violence from within. it is impossible to imagine the congress of the united states ignoring the first of these imperatives. an act of omission that would leave us open to foreign attack and invasion. tragically, we can't say the same about attacks on the country's domestic tranquility. what has the congress done to protect the country? nothing. and here's the question. when will we refuse as citizens to settle for, accept, live with a congress that fails to act in the face of such a demonstrated vulnerability? if not now, after this, when? next week? next month? next year? next what? and if not us, who in this world is going to demand action to protect americans? joining me now is u.s. senator dick durbin of illinois. i want to read something from you which is very impressive, and it's in the op-ed pages of "the chicago tribune." quote,

america makes me say, you know, enough is enough. there's got to be a rational way to sort through this. i'm not saying i've got a perfect piece of legislation. i don't think there is a single perfect piece of legislation. but in a country where we got 30,000 gun deaths a year, there's got to be a way that we can do a bit more. i hope that responsible gun owners around america will join in this conversation as well. i think we have to recognize that it is about rational appropriate gun rules but also about mental health issues. my hope is our country takes a deep breath and doesn't just simply get exercised by this for a few moments and then push this horrible tragedy back into the background and forget about it. >> ifill: assuming that there is is not one single solution here, let's talk about what you mean when you say rational gun control. senator feinstein says an assault weapons ban would be rational. would you agree with that? >> i think that from the evidence i've seen that a lot of the challenge comes around the speed by which you can shoot... in effect, you can shoot these

that was going on, unbelievable. 1965, america took the step to become a compassion nature nation where we would take care of the elderly. proposals that have been talked about, the republican budget basically terminating medicare or whittling away at it, increasing the eligibility age from 65 to 67, what is a person to do when they are 65 and cannot get private insurance and at the same time they want to do away with the opportunity that exists in the affordable health care act for an exchange that could possibly provide the insurance. they want to do away with that. come on. this is america. this is where we take caref the elderly and provide the services. medicare can be dealt with. we can deal with the inflation in medicare and in the affordable care act, many things were done to start on that process. for example, keeping seniors healthy, providing for the annual medical checkup, making sure they had the drug benefits, making sure that part d was available to all seniors, closing the doughnut hole in the medicare part d drug benefit. electronic medical records. infection rate
